Climate change is one of the most pressing concerns of our time – and climate policy may be one of the most effective tools for countering it.

What is Climate Policy?

Climate policy is a set of governmental measures whose aims typically touch on three key areas:

·       Decreasing greenhouse gas emissions

·       Increasing the use of non-fossil and renewable energy sources

·       Preparing for the consequences of global warming

Carbon Carbon Carbon

Most policies relating to reduced greenhouse gases focus on minimizing the amount of carbon in our atmosphere, often in the form of carbon taxes or cap-and-trade systems. Basically: companies have to lower their emissions because it literally costs them money to not do so. By placing a price on carbon, the incentive is to use cleaner technologies and renewable energy sources – resulting in lower emissions. A big win.

Renewable Energy

Besides carbon pricing, there is a need to invest in non-fossil energy infrastructure, which includes:

·       Solar

·       Wind

·       Hydroelectric power

Governments worldwide are facilitating this shift with subsidies, tax incentives, and research grants for renewable energy projects. In addition to benefiting the atmosphere, these forms of energy also create employment and boost economic development – another huge positive.

Climate Adaptation

Even though efforts are being made to minimize global warming, humanity will still need to adapt to a changing climate. One area to think about is farming. Policy will be crucial for constructing flood barriers, enhancing drainage systems, and conserving marshlands.

Working Together

Policy may be our secret weapon for reducing the effects of climate change and guaranteeing the future of the planet. And it will only be effective if we collaborate across borders. International treaties like the Paris Agreement are a positive start – because, together, we can coordinate and accomplish much more.
